A Day at the Museum

Year 3's excursion to the Australian Museum included a workshop about life of Indigenous Australians before the arrival of the First Fleet. It was amazing how much our budding historians had already learnt from our History unit on 'Community and 'Remembrance'. Many thanks to our parent volunteers and Mr Campbell for helping out on the day!
An animal now extinct - Koala's face but Kangaroo's body!

Shields, woomera, fire starter and boomerangs - traditionally men's tools.

How to carry a coolamon - use some twine wound into a ring.

To gather berries quickly, a dilly bag is worn around the head - traditionally used by women.

Face painting - symbols of water, campfires and berry plants.

Our tribal warriors!

Testing cave painting skills - our artists knew about traditional symbols from Mrs Siokas' lessons.

Using stone and rock to grind seeds into 'flour'.

"Look at the turtle on my face!"

Woven fishing net, digging sticks and a coolamon....all prepared for a day's food gathering.

Studying Australian native species.

A leaf insect is difficult to spot...

This shell is just the right size!

Treasures of the sea.

  1. Hi Year 3
I'm really enjoying reading your blog and discovering about how much learning you are doing. I liked your recount of the Museum visit. You should read my account on my Principal's Blog. I've put up a few videos, including a really good one of Charlie! I liked your Disco pictures too!! You look as though you all had a great time. See you when I get back from Ireland
